“Wine Vision by Open Balkan”: A Celebration of Regional Unity and Fine Wines in Skopje
Skopje, the capital city of North Macedonia, hosted the presentation of the largest regional wine fair, “Wine Vision by Open Balkan.” This prestigious event, organized jointly by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Water Economy of North Macedonia, along with the counterpart ministries of Serbia and Albania, showcased the expanding wine industry and highlighted the growing regional cooperation among these countries.
The Open Balkan initiative helps promote wine as a symbol of regional identity and a catalyst for closer collaboration among member states. The first edition of “Wine Vision by Open Balkan” in Belgrade served as a testament to this shared vision. Building upon its success, the initiative’s second edition, scheduled for this fall, has prompted the member states to organize promotional events throughout the region, with Skopje hosting a notable presentation.
North Macedonia’s Prime Minister, Dimitar Kovachevski emphasized the profound impact of the Open Balkan initiative, stating that the participating countries have never collaborated as they do now. Wine Vision by Open Balkan plays a pivotal role in bolstering regional trade and economic exchange, which has already witnessed a remarkable increase of 25 percent. Notably, the trade between Serbia and North Macedonia alone has surpassed EUR 1.1 billion, reaching the highest level in the past 17 years. The introduction of green lanes for transporters at borders and the implementation of electronic identification systems have further facilitated the movement of goods and workers within the region. Prime Minister Kovachevski expressed his unwavering commitment to fostering cooperation, communication, trade, and investments, underscoring the deserving nature of the region’s citizens.
North Macedonia’s Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Water Management, Ljupcho Nikolovski regarded the Open Balkan initiative as a resounding success, uniting the region and promoting economic cooperation. Drawing upon the famous Latin proverb, “In vino veritas” (In wine, there is truth), Nikolovski emphasized the genuine truth of a united and welcoming Balkans. The minister encouraged everyone to revel in the unique flavors and tastes of Balkan wines and cuisine, which have garnered global recognition. Highlighting the importance of preserving traditions and embracing the region’s natural wealth, Nikolovski praised the current generation of politicians for their bold decisions, including the opening of borders and fostering a shared future for the entire region.
Serbian Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Water Management, Jelena Tanasković, attended a wine gathering in Skopje, extending an invitation to all wine producers and traders from North Macedonia to participate in the second edition of “Wine Vision by Open Balkan” to be held in Belgrade from November 16 to 19 this year. The promotion of the wine fair in Skopje was a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Water Management of North Macedonia and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Water Management of Serbia, reflecting the shared commitment to regional cooperation and the celebration of fine wines.
The presentation in Skopje drew an enthusiastic and diverse audience, with over 100 wineries from the Republic of North Macedonia, as well as representatives from the wine industry of Albania and Serbia, and members of the media in attendance. This vibrant gathering showcased the region’s thriving wine community and underscored the significant interest and support for the Wine Vision by Open Balkan initiative.
