Wines from the Holy Imperial Serbian Lavra of Hilandar are produced on mountain Athos, in the Garden of the Most Holy Mother of God, an Orthodox monastic community that has existed for over a thousand years. The first wine trade was established as early as 972 AD in the imperial Athos charter. Today, Mount Athos is a vibrant treasury of Orthodox civilization and a unique area for wine production with protected geographical origin. In the Serbian jewel of Mount Athos, Hilandar, the endowment of Saint Sava and Saint Simeon, monks have been producing wine from their founder’s estates since 1198, the year the monastery was established. In addition to preserving ancient vineyards, the Hilandar Monastery restored the former vineyard at Savino Polje in 2008, located about 2 kilometers north of the monastery, at the foot of the Pirg of Saint King Milutin from the 14th century, right by the coast of the Aegean Sea. On a surface area of 15 hectares, they cultivate Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc varieties. Alongside the vineyard, modern winery facilities have been established in the 18th-century port buildings. Hilandar wines come exclusively from Mount Athos, from the monastery’s winery and the vineyards at Savino Polje. They represent a blessing that ensures the fundamental mission of Hilandar: spiritual life and the protection of cultural heritage. They are characterized by a successful blend of classic Bordeaux varieties and cuvées from sun-drenched Mediterranean vineyards, providing a rich and complex experience while fully maintaining the unique Hilandar and Athos “terroir” in which they were created.
